  1. HUD is seeking to reform decades-old rent policies that are confusing, costly and counterproductive, in that the incentives they create often fail to adequately support individuals and families receiving HUD rental assistance in increasing their earnings.

  2. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the selection of Joel Baxley as Rural Housing Service Administrator. Baxley has built a long career in housing finance and real estate issues.

  3. The unemployment rate falls to 3.8% in May, the lowest in over 18 years, America’s job market remains strong. The unemployment rates for African-Americans and Asian-Americans reached record lows. Adult women and adult men recorded the lowest unemployment rates since 2000, at 3.3% and 3.5% respectively.

  4. U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta today issued the following statement regarding the March 2019 Employment Situation report:
    “The March jobs report exceeded expectations with 196,000 new jobs created. Adding upward revisions of 14,000 jobs from the past two months, means that more than 5.1 million jobs have been created since January 2017.
    “The unemployment rate held steady at 3.8%, marking the thirteenth straight month the unemployment rate was at or below 4.0%. In particular, the 3.3% unemployment rate for adult women matched the low since 1953.”

  5. Acting Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Joel Baxley announced that USDA is investing $485 million to upgrade rural electric systems and reduce energy costs. The funding includes nearly $7.1 million for smart grid technologies that improve system operations and monitor grid security.

  6. U.S. Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia issued the following statement on the September 2019 Employment Situation report:
    “In September, the unemployment rate dropped to a 50-year low at 3.5%. This was the nineteenth straight month that the unemployment rate has been at or below 4%.
    “It is welcome news that Americans with disabilities set a new record low unemployment rate, as we observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month this October.

  7. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Donald “DJ” LaVoy today announced that USDA is investing $42.5 million in 133 distance learning and telemedicine projects in 37 states and two U.S. territories. USDA is providing the funding through the Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program. These investments will benefit 5.4 million rural residents.

  8. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York added $103.65 billion in temporary liquidity to the financial system on Thursday. The intervention came via overnight repurchase agreements, or repos, that totaled $74.45 billion, and via 14-day repos totaling $29.2 billion.
